I was just like everybody else a few weeks ago. I assumed that TCU's strength of schedule was far and away better than BSU's. I assumed that it was inevitable that TCU would jump BSU in the polls and I assumed it was deservedly so. But is it justified? I argue no. I bought into BSU's "soft schedule" theory and TCU's "great schedule" theory after listening to the experts cram both down my throat. But then I looked at it. TCU's schedule is only slightly better than BSU's from a percentage standpoint (.507 vs. .413), but they have not beaten a single team currently ranked in the top 25. Meanwhile, with Oregon being the highest ranked 1 loss team, BSU has the single best win of anybody in college football. Somebody needs to explain to me why TCU's leap-frogging is generally accepted as justified when the opponent winning percentage differences are miniscule and BSU is the only team between the two that actually has a win that they can truly hang their hat on. With the qualifications being a dead-heat, I would give the edge to the team with the most impressive win in the entire country.

It's not how you act, it's how you react. If someone provokes you, it's up to you to be the bigger person. Yes Carlee gave her a bit of an elbow, but it's not as if she full on hit her with the elbow. Either way it didn't give Lambert the right to punch Carlee in the back. It also didn't give Lambert the right to almost snap Kassidy Shumway's neck! So what if Kassidy grabbed her shorts? You can clearly tell in the video she was not aiming for Lambert's crotch, as many people are saying, and she wasn't trying to pull them off. Once again it's not how you act, it's how you react. Lambert could've chosen to react in a way that didn't resort to that kind of behavior. As far as people saying "well why didn't BYU retaliate?," I have a good answer for that. Coach Rockwood does not and will not tolerate that kind of behavior from her players. If they would've chosen to stoop to that level they would be off the team immediately! Kassidy and Carlee are two of BYU's best players and I think it was right for them not to risk missing the rest of the tournament for another girls stupidity. Like I said before it's not how you act, it's how you react. I tip my hat to Coach Rockwood and the BYU women's soccer team for being the bigger person in this entire situation.

The Yankees won the world series thus officially completing the circle of legendary franchises winning championships. The Steelers (and Giants)are back on top of the NFL, the Lakers and Celtics are rivals once more, the penguins are champions again and joining the figurative table of legends is the iconic beast known around the world as the New York Yankees. Love or hate these franchises, but you have to respect the luster and interest they bring to their individual leauges. Sure its a nice story to see small franchises defy the odds and win the big one but lets be honest; the Marlins are not the Yankees, The Avalanche are not the Penguins, the Cardinals are no Steelers and the Spurs...well...although good; their just old and boring. Look, i love the under dog just as much as the next guy but sports are just not the same without the greatest teams being great. And for all those under dog lovers out there turn on your tv's and get your haterade on ice because you now have a plethora of Davids, but only a few Goliaths.

Another unconventional blog from yours truly. Over the past couple of weeks, I have come across a number of individuals that for a number of reasons (sufficient and insufficient); do not like a specific type of sports organization. These organizations would include the New York Yankees, Los Angeles Lakers, Dallas Cowboys, Boston Red Sox, Manchester United, and New England Patriots among others. These are the organizations that win with currency and arrogance more often than not. I, too, have an issue with a couple of these organizations, but not for the same reasons as you think. When I was younger, I will admit that I hated theYankees and Lakers because they were good, and once Roman Abramovich purchased his play thing, I found a deep hatred for the blue side in London. But I have matured over the past couple of years. I still dislike the Lakers, not because of their financial prowess, but because I have this feeling in the pit of my stomach that they play with the strings of the NBA’s brass. Kwame Brown for Pau Gasol, are you kidding me!?!?!? That’s for another time. My issues with these clubs have more to do with muscling themselves into the spotlight of the sport without consideration for other organizations in the leagues. The Cowboys have to build the greatest footballing spectacle in sports, and because of this, have received 3 prime time football games 9 weeks into the season. The Boston Red Sox couldn’t scout for a while and so to compete, had to spend dollar to dollar with the New York Yankees. The Los Angeles Lakers are always shown on TNT, Christmas and ESPN on Thursday nights. I don’t believe in salary caps, so I have to let these types of things go, but I’m not here to talk about that either. Today I am here to talk about Chelsea.

This Sunday morning at 10:00a.m. CDT, Manchester United will travel down to the bridge to play Chelsea in what probably is the second biggest domestic match we will see this season. (I’m assuming that the Madrid-Barca clash will be the biggest, both in opinion and fact). Let me share a little story about my feelings for Chelsea that would surprise each and every one of you. Once upon a time, in a tournament long, long ago, Chelsea played Liverpool for the chance to go to the 2005 European Champions League Final. The first game resulted in a 0-0 tie. 4 minutes into the second game, one Luis Garcia scored a goal for Liverpool (maybe) that knocked Chelsea out of Champions League. Never had I been so happy. Stop.

Liverpool winning? Me happy? This was how much I disliked Chelsea during that time. I did not deem it ethical for a rich man to come and pay all kinds of money for a club that he had no relationship with, only that he just wanted to see if he could bring success to any club in the world. I may have been jealous at the time, but I wanted nothing more than for this side to get what was coming to them. During those first years, they purchased Adrian Mutu, Claude Makelele, Arjen Robben, Glen Johnson, Damien Duff, Ricardo Carvalho, Didier Drogba, Mateja Kezman, Joe Cole and Petr Cech among others. If United had that kind of spending power, we could’ve gotten Trezeguet, Ronaldinho, Michael Ballack and Gianluca Zambrotta, because we were already a brand. But once Chelsea became a ‘brand’, my hatred for them diminished a bit. I have always respected winning organizations, as long as it’s done the right way. I still don’t believe in Chelsea’s process of going through managers once every season, but you can’t ignore the results. Any other club besides United, Barca, Madrid and maybe Milan would be satisfied with this decade. 2 domestic titles, 4 cup titles, plenty or runner-up finishes and a wet ground away from winning a Champions League title.

I think Chelsea has gone about establishing themselves the right way. It’s funny what time will do to people. They have created a strong squad through many transfers, yes, but have built an identity while doing so. John Terry is a Chelsea player. Michael Essien is a Chelsea player. Didier Drogba is a Chelsea player. And so from afar, I grudgingly give my admiration. On Sunday, regardless of the result, there will be no more hatred from this view behind the computer screen. Only respect for a side that can challenge for titles, quality, global support, and community in ways they couldn’t have dreamed of just ten years ago. The same respect that I also give to the New York Yankees, Dallas Cowboys, New England Patriots and Real Madrid.

This is a BIG ONE! White Out Conditions. I hope the football team is as Fired up as the fans. Penn Stats needs to do two things ro win this game. 1). Win the tunrover battle. 2). Run the ball well, especially in the REDZONE!

Ohio State has a stout defense. They make you earn every yard. But that deosn't mean they are unbeatable. We made a statement in the Michigan game. Then we cameout and took it to North Western at thier place. NOW WE HAVE A CHANCE TO PUT AN EXCLAMATION POINT ON OUR STATEMENT!

Defensively just keep doing what we are doing. Defense has been awsome as always. Defensive ends keep OUTSIDE CONTAIN. Do not let Pryor cramble to the outside. Force him in between the tackles so that when he decides to take off. He runs right into those Line backers. Gonna have to keep on of them line backers SPYING on pryor on throwing downs. But that will keep the linebackers in the box to Stuff Ohio States running game.

Classy move UNM.

I understand the consequences of being a poor sport, a sore loser, and an outright dirty player. I’ve played against players who have a shameless disregard of the actual game. Players who kicked at my shins because I cut back with the ball so fast I broke the opposing players hip. On the soccer field everything happens fast. A lot faster than you would expect. I understand how Elizabeth Lambert felt. I didn’t just receive kicks on the shins, and jabs in the kidneys, I delivered them too.

After playing keeper for 2 years I was moved to sweeper, as captain I needed to be out on the field. Everything happened so fast, just like in football. Your reaction is driven by the adrenaline pumping through your system. You stop thinking clearly.

Back to my point.

UNM has suspended Elizabeth for over-aggressive plays against a player on the soccer pitch. She has been suspended indefinitely. Cue Mike Locksley. The UNM head football coach committed assault on a fellow coach. He lied about the incident at first downplaying what actually happened. He then took it back and said that maybe it was more than a shoving match. He just grabbed him by the neck. That’s all. The pictures would later prove that a punch was in fact landed. The bruise on the neck proved the beastly act which Locksley so hotly denied was really what it was. A thugh in a coach’s outfit.

What is it UNM? You couldn’t suspend Locksley because he is black? Just 4 black coaches in the NCAA, we can’t touch him. HA! Way to go UNM, you are so fair. You suspend an athlete indefinitely and let your Gangsta’ walk free. In fact, the assistant coach involved in the Locksley debacle was so humiliated he decided his job was no longer fun. Would you like to go to work knowing a 700 lb. man wanted to tear your head off? NO. Hell no. I am not a UNM graduate; in fact I am the opposite. I am an NMSU Aggie who hasn’t graduated. However if I was somehow affiliated with the University Of New Mexico I would demand answers. In a world where football players get suspended for 1 or two games for worst things, and coaches get fined 5 figures for bad mouthing officials, this hardly seems fair. The 10 day suspension of Locksley is laughable. UNM is what, like 0 wins 6,000,000,000,000 losses, like it mattered if he was on the sideline or not. Hit him where it hurts. His pocket.

Suddenly DeWayne Walker and NMSU look like an Urban Meyer at Florida or like a Pete Carroll at USC. UNM thanks for sucking it up.

Stay Classy UNM

Recently a disturbing under current (actually about 3 people) has started to infiltrate our basketball discussions. They pose as basketball fans. They talk about the most recent game or an all time great player to lure you in. Then they reveal their true self when they mention some obscure stat. You know the ones I'm talking about. It started with PER (thanks Hollinger we needed another stat). Now its devolved into win shares, true shooting %, offense load %, etc. Now don't get me wrong, I have nothing against discussing stats. They actually have their place. But that place is the same place you used to keep your dog (before PETA), in the backyard chained to an old tire. Sure, you went out to visit & play with him from time to time. But he never came in the house. Where I'm from we learned the game by playing. Then we went home & watched the game with Pops. Since it was before computers, we didn't thumb through pages & pages of stats trying to learn about the game or determine which pro player was better than another. We knew about the game then, just as we know about the game now. Recently the discussion turned to who was clutch & who was not. Again this is another area that most are in total agreement. But then the stat crew showed up throwing out game winning %, 4th quarter offensive load & other blah. If they spent as much time saving money as they do reading mindless stats, the stat crew could afford to buy League Pass. Then maybe they would be able to actually watch some games and make a true assessment of a player's ability. People focusing on stats to much is like opening a book & only finding the last page. Sure you will know how the book ends but can you really tell me about the story. I have an experiment for the stat crew. I want you to get up one Saturday morning, have nice breakfast (including drinking the OJ w/ your name on it), borrow your mother's 1997 Chevy Lumina & run down to the local sporting goods sport (probably Dick's). Now since you have know prior hoop experience, you more than likely have no hoop gear. So go crazy. Get every single piece of basketball equipment they have. Drive down to the park or to the "Y" and call next game. Now the fellas will probably ask you if you can play, but don't tell them about you ill handle or your rebounding prowess. Tell them about the win share you had the last time you played ball or how high your PER was during the rec season last year. If you're lucky, they will just laugh at you. More than likely you will get beat up & lose all the new stuff you just bought. Now limp home, head back down to mommy's basement & put on that WWHD bracelet (What Would Hollinger Do). You had a full day stat boy.

there is one very simple difference between Bret Favre and Aaron Rogers- one is a leader and the other is not (not yet anyway). the difference between a quarterback and a leader is that the leader will make every one better. the leader will inspire others to follow the lead, to come in early and leave late, to study, to learn. the quarterback may put up fantastic fantasy numbers, while the leader gets the W's.

Any comment about sports has to be backed up by statistics. If you have statistics then fine if its just your opinion then shut your mouth.
