The more I watch college football the more I realize it can’t be predicted.
I mean almost every week there seems to be a new number one team in the rankings. So far there have been five #1 ranked teams, in nine weeks of college football. The Trojans have had the longest stay atop #!, partly because they didn’t play two of the weeks they were ranked #1.
Going into last Saturday’s games, all the “experts" were predicting the Longhorns to go undefeated. Then they go and lose to the 7th ranked Red Raiders. Now there are only 6 teams left undefeated, only three being from major BCS conferences. The Tide are ranked at #1, but they still have three tough wins left on the season if they want to make it to the national championship game. The LSU and the Auburn tigers pose a threat to Bama. But the hardest test the Tide will face comes from the Florida Gators, who manhandled the Bulldogs to the score of 49-10. And ever since the 4th quarter of the Arkansas game the Gators have been unstoppable. Just ask the following coaches, Mark Richt, Les Miles, Bobby Petrino, and Rich Brooks, they gave up a combined 192 points while only scoring 43 points. These teams were no slouches either; they had a combined record of 16-5 before each one played Florida. Now the Florida Gators and the Crimson tide have a game that could ultimately decide who plays in the national championship game when they face off in the SEC championship game.
Another Team I want to talk about is the now 7-2 Bulldogs, who were manhandled in both their losses. They went into the season ranked number one, and now they find themselves at 14th. I don’t think that the preseason Bulldogs were overrated at all. In fact I think that, that team was better than any other team in the nation. This may seem a dumb thing to say, when the bulldogs are obviously not even one of the top ten teams in the nation, (and rightfully so). But look at the difference between the preseason bulldogs and the week 10 bulldogs. The team lost their best two defensive players in the form of Jeff Owens, and Trinton Sturdivant. Both these players are future NFL players that would have helped the bulldogs vastly. Then you take in to account all the other injuries, and the fact that they have lost three players in one position alone due to injuries.
This team is clearly not the same team that went into the year trying to win their first national championship game since 1980. Now the Dawgs find themselves out of there own division race and looking at possible Cotton bowl. The Dawgs are a young and inexperienced team that played just good enough to beat the OK teams, but were completely outplayed when they played a couple great teams, R.I.P 2008 Bulldogs.
The national championship is still wide open to about ten teams, and it could showcase two teams that nobody would have ever thought going into the season, Texas Tech, and Penn State. I would be surprise if we don’t see at least 3 more different #1 ranked teams before the years end. .
