The Dallas Cowboys love hearing themselves referred to the moniker of ‘America’s Team.’ It is a name that instills a margin of patriotism in Cowboys’ fans every time it is said. America, in my humble opinion, is the greatest country on Earth, and if you are a fan of America’s Team, it almost makes you feel like you are truly a part of something special. Although I would never, personally, see the Cowboys as America’s team, I understand why they could be considered as such. Like America, the Cowboys are winners; they have appeared in 8 Super Bowls, more than any other team, and won 5 of them. Like America, the Cowboys have a horrendous drug problem; Michael Irvin’s coke and hookers and Nate Newton’s mini-drug cartel are poster children for anti-drug campaigns. Like Americans, the Cowboys have bought a new home, Cowboys Stadium, on credit, 1.2 billion dollars, that they will probably never pay off. Americans can relate to the Cowboys, and even though I don’t agree with them being ‘America’s Team,’ I can understand it.

The New York Yankees go by a slightly different moniker though: The Evil Empire. Before I go any further I should let it be known that I despise the Yankees. But maybe I am supposed to? The Yankees seem to have everything a true ‘America’s Team’ should have. They have a plethora of championships, money galore, and, at least in the North East, a monster fan base. But to me, they are like the North Korea of Baseball. Yes I went there. Like Kim Jong Il, the Yankees have a crazy leader, George Steinbrenner, who is also hell-bent on world domination. Where North Korea spends every last cent on its military and still ends up being mediocre at best, the Yankees spend over 200 million a year on their roster and have nothing to show for it since 2003. In North Korea, no matter how much you love your country, and do well for your country, if you screw up you are thrown from the good graces of “The Leader” into a prison camp. In the Yankees, no matter how much you love your team, and win championships (Joe Torre) for your team, a little underperformance will get you sent to the lowly Dodgers. I don’t know if I believe any of the bull crap that I just said, but it feels right. To me, the Yankees are America's Evil Empire.

So what is the point of this blog? Honestly, I want to belittle any championship that the Yankees ever win. Baseball shouldn’t be about how much money you have, and as the Rays proved last year, it doesn’t. The Yankees want to skip all of the trials and tribulations that every other team in the league goes through by throwing enormous amounts of cash on the field. And while Yankees fans love having a contender year-in and year-out, the rest of the country sees the Yankees as an Evil Empire hell bent on taking over the league. Some might consider me a hater, but I disagree. As a life-long White Sox fan, the tremendous elation I felt as I saw Mark Buehrle hoist the championship trophy was one of the greatest feelings a fan could have. That is because my team, unlike the Yankees, didn’t walk into a knife fight carrying a Bazooka. The White Sox, and all of the other teams that have won championships the past 20 years earned their accolades; the Yankees paid for theirs.
