Greatest Sports Moment
1977 OU vs. Ohio State Game:
My favorite all time sooner moment
came in 1977,when OU played Ohio St
for the very first time in the
history of the two schools. OU was
loaded that year with Thomas Lott
at quarterback, Kenny King at
fullback, future Heisman winner
Billy Sims at halfback and Elvis
Peacock the other halfback. Talk
about a all-star backfield, I don't
think we will ever see a backfield
at OU that will ever top that one,
and if we do ..Oh boy. OU also had
a couple of Sooner legends playing
on defense that year too with
Darryl Hunt and converted fullback
George Cumby at the linebacker
positions, and future NFL star
Darrell Ray at safety. OU' first
touchdown was somewhat of a fluke,
as Thomas Lott and Kenny King
fumbled a handoff exchange and the
ball got kicked and somehow bounced
right up into Elvis Peacocks hands
and he galloped in for a 32-yard
touchdown. On Ohio St's ensuing
possession, on their very first
play from scrimmage, Darryl Hunt
popped the ball loose from OSU's
quarterback Rod Gerald. A couple of
plays later the great Billy Sims
scored on a 15 yard touchdown
giving OU a quick 14-0 lead and
things looked bright. After a 3 and
out on OSU's next possession, OU
drove down inside the 10,but due to
a holding penalty which backed us
up to the 20,and the drive stalled
and we had to kick a field goal
giving us a 17-0 lead. On OSU's
next possession, OU again held them
to a 3 and out, and forced them to
punt, and OU took over at the OSU
47.On OU's next drive, things were
looking good with OU driving, but
Thomas Lott also got injured and
never returned to the game. OU did
however, manage to get another
field goal and a 20-0 lead. On
OSU's next possession, they finally
got something going and started to
drive and managed to score a
touchdown on Ron Springs 32 yard
run, making the score 20-7.Things
went downhill from there, and OU
turned the ball over 6 out of their
next 9 possessions. With Jay
Jimerson ineffective as backup
qb,OU turned to a guy by the name
of Dean Blevins. OU finally managed
to get a drive going, and was deep
in OSU territory but Dean Blevins
threw one up for grabs and OSU got
the ball with about 3 minutes left
to play. But OU's Reggie Kinlaw
managed to knock the ball loose and
we got the ball back. With less
than 3 minutes left to play OU
drove and we managed to eke out a
touchdown on a 4th down 2 yard
Elvis Peacock pitch from Blevins,
and with time running out, there
was no choice but to go for 2,and
we didn't make it. So, with less
than 2 minutes left to play, OU
went for the onside kick, and a
fellow buy the name of Mike Babb
managed to recover the balloon OU's
first play, Dean Blevins hit Steve
Rhodes on a slant to the 32.From
there we drove down to the OSU
23,setting up a 41-yard field goal
try. Woody Hyes called timeout,
trying to ice OU kicker Uwe Von
Schumann. With the crowd chanting
BLOCK THAT KICK!BLOCK THAT KICK!
Uwe commenced to leading their
chant like an orchestra conductor
LOL.As cool as a cucumber, Uwe
kicked the game winner right down
the middle. OU players and fans
went crazy. That was a classic game
I will never forget and is my
favorite Sooner moment.

A player is one who doesn’t give up at the
sight of defeat,
But learns from their mistakes and puts them
beneath.
A player is one who doesn’t give up at the
sound of the buzzer,
Always giving what they have from one side of the
court to the other.
A player is one who doesn’t whine about
their playing time,
Because a player knows it’s an unacceptable
crime.
