Random thoughts about NBA, Big Brown, retirement, and others

Posted 06/10/2008/03:38:37 ago

Big Brown not getting his monthly steroid shot was not the reason he lost the Belmont; he missed his May 15th injection…the Preakness was two days later, yet he still won that by what, 4 or 5 lengths?

The race was not fixed.

The last two sack leaders in the NFL have been suspended for substance abuse (Merriman four games and Allen two games).

The officiating has been terribly called in Boston’s favor save VladRad’s blatantly obvious travel late in the game—38 to 10 FT advantage? As Phil Jackson pointed out in the postgame press conference, Leon Powe had more FTs than the whole Lakers team in only 15 minutes.

Great career for Michael Strahan, who retired today. Favre, Strahan, Sapp—the 2013 HOF class will be special.

ABC’s coverage of the Belmont post-race was horrific. I had to wait for 30 minutes of “Is Big Brown injured?” interviews to end until they finally showed Da’ Tara and his jockey, owner and trainer.

When will Doc learn to play Eddie House instead of Sam Cassell? The past 2 games Housh has been a DNP, while Sam has taken 14 shots and has only 8 points.

Bears released Benson today…Good thing they didn’t hold out like they did keeping Grossman their starter in their SB year.

What’s up with the bizarre baseball standings thus far? Tampa Bay Devil Rays only a game and a half back of the Red Sox, Yanks tied for last in the AL East, Detroit and Cleveland at the bottom of the AL Central and the White Sox on top, Mariners sixteen out of first (and nine behind the Rangers), the Marlins three games ahead of the Mets, and so on…

Red Sox over the Phillies in the WS. Heard it here first.

And the Yanks will miss the postseason.

Last month the #1 women’s tennis player retired at 25 years old. Quick, what was her name? You probably don’t know, do you? Michael Weinreb wrote a fantastic article about this on ESPN.com’s Page 2. Her name was Justine Henin, by the way.

With Avery Johnson and Flip Saunders still available, why did Phoenix sign Porter as their HC, and why is Vinny Del Negro – yes, that’s really his name: Vinny of the Black – the leading candidate for the Bulls job? He’s had no prior coaching experience.

And why have the Pistons, one of the leading franchises in the NBA, hired Michael Curry for the HC position? He also has no prior head coaching experience, and Avery is still unemployed..?

Speaking of Detroit, the Red Wings won the Stanley Cup last Wednesday, and according to NBC, the “Game 6 clincher drew a 4.4 overnight rating and a 7 share on the network. By comparison Game 7 in 2003, which according to A.C. Nielson at the time was the most watched NHL game in the U.S. in 29 years, drew a 4.6.”

And speaking of the Red Wings, Dominik Hasek retired today and will be remembered as one of the great goalies of all time, and maybe the best European goalie of all time. He won two Hart trophies (MVPs), the only goalie with multiple trohpies; he won six Vezina trophies (best goalie), second all time, only one behind Jacques Plante.

Ken Griffey hit his 600th HR tonight. He’s missed 578 games due to injury or rest in his career. Think about that for a second…he could be challenging Bonds’ record without all his injuries. He’s definitely one of the bests baseball players ever.

Tiger Woods still hasn’t played a full round of golf without a cart since his knee surgery. But, no worries. He should still finish in the top 5 or 10 at the tough Torrey Pines.

Gilbert Arenas opted out of his contract, and he’s now an unrestricted free agent. I see him re-signing with the Wizards (along with Jamison who’s also a UFA). If it weren’t for his two knee surgeries he’d probably get a max deal with someone with cap space (76ers, anyone?).

With the 2-3-2 playoff series the Lakers can win the three at home, then the very next game at Boston with momentum on their side, like Miami did vs Dallas in 06.

RIP Jim McKay.
