Giants look to acquire left-handed bat: With less than a month before the trading deadline, the Giants’ search for another hitter, according to one major league executive, has focused on three first basemen: Washington’s Nick Johnson, Baltimore’s Aubrey Huff and Pittsburgh’s Adam LaRoche. They’ve also spoken to San Diego about a deal that would send starter Jonathan Sanchez to the Padres for outfielder Scott Hairston.

Left fielder John Bowker is hotter than the baked turf at Triple-A Fresno. He entered Thursday with a .355 average. His 12 home runs in June set a Fresno record for any month. He was the top vote getter among coaches and players for the Triple-A All-Star Game. But if the Giants wanted to swap the two outfielders, they'd have to designate Lewis for assignment and expose him to waivers.

Source: Sixers now courting PG Bibby Concerned that 33-year-old Andre Miller wants too much money ($30 million) and too many years (three) to remain with the Sixers, team president Ed Stefanski has reached out to the Hawks' Mike Bibby, according to a source close to the situation. Bibby, like Miller an unrestricted free-agent point guard, is represented by David Falk, who is also Elton Brand's agent. Bibby is looking for more than the mid-level exception of $5.6 million, which is all the Sixers can offer unless it's a sign-and-trade deal. The Sixers seemingly don't want to offer more than two years for 30-somethings like Miller and Bibby, who is 31, given the anticipated cost of looming contract extensions for Thaddeus Young and possibly Marreese Speights.

Extra Baggs: Giants sign pitcher Marvin Barrios to six-figure deal. The club signed Marvin Barrios, a 17-year-old right-hander from Panama, to a six-figure bonus. Barrios is 6-foot-2 and 190 pounds. He’s significant not only because of his arm, but because of where the Giants found him.

On another note, I like the move to the bullpen for Sanchez. His mechanics have always been suited better for relief. How bout a starting rotation next season of Lincecum, Cain, Zito, Bumgardner & Alderson? Sounds pretty tasty to me.

I know this is a Giants board, but join me in observing a moment of silence on July 4th. It is the 70th anniversary of Lou Gehrig's farewell speech at Yankee Stadium. http://sportsnation.espn.go.com/fans/tybae40/blog/posts/88483 No matter what team you're a fan of, Lou Gehrig touched the very soul of Baseball and its fans.

Jonathan Sanchez isn’t just in the bullpen to get work. He’ll pitch in high-leverage situations, too, and give Manager Bruce Bochy a second lefty to help out Jeremy Affeldt. It’s something the Giants have been without ever since optioning Alex Hinshaw on April 21.

International Free Agency: Giants Strike Out on Wagner With the period opening to sign international free agents, the name the Giants were most associated with was OF Wagner Mateo. Unfortunately, according to reports from ESPN.com's Jorge Arangure (as reported by MLBTradeRumors.com), it looks like the Cardinals will beat out the Giants to Wagner Mateo. They reportedly will sign him to a $3.1M bonus; the Giants apparently nearly offered him $3.5M but backed off at the last minute. (Why they couldn't offer $3.2M, I'm not sure).

Hey, I just got back from the Giants Cards game in Saint Louis. It was incredible!! Way to go Timmy. Uribe hit a shot to Big Mac Land and Ishikawa's three run homer went 418ft. I am going again tomorrow.

The Sixers don't need Jrue Holiday to be an offensive threat, they have Iguodala, Thad, Brand and even Lou to score points. They don't need him to orchestrate the offense, really. The Princeton offense doesn't demand the traditional point to get things going. Holiday can play the point without really needing to trigger offense. Again, he'll have playmakers on the floor with him at all times.
