NFL Has A Problem With Their Cable And Brandon Spikes Bails Out His CoachESPN_RobertFlores | November, 05 2009 03:32:15 | Comments: 0 | Rating: 0In a different time, Tom Cable would have been a perfect fit for the Oakland Raiders. Heck, maybe he's the perfect fit for a once proud franchise. The allegations of Cable's abuse both at work and at home, if true are disturbing and criminal. I'm just wondering... Where is the NFL? Doesn't it's personal conduct policy apply to all employees? Including coaches? At the very least, their lack of action or investigation and action into Cable is a p-r blunder; at worst it's sets a double standard between players and coaches. I don't always agree with USA Today's Christine Brennan's but in this case she's right on. http://www.usatoday.com/sports/columnist/brennan/2009-11-04-tom-cable_N.htm Spikes Nails It I've said before that the Florida Gators football program remind me of a little bit of the Duke University basketball program of the early 90's. Both are/were extremely succesful, and both are/were the most polarizing figures of their respective sports. Linebacker Brandon Spikes attempt to go all Three Stooges on Georgia's Washaun Ealey didn't win them any fans. Urban Meyer's punishment didn't either. Meyer decided to sit Spikes for a half Saturday against Vanderbilt. Spikes decided to make it the entire game. The linebacker's actions Saturday were disgusting, but his actions Wednesday evening were honorable. Meyer should have known better, and made the suspension longer. Coach's teach their players throughout the year, this time it was Meyer that was taught a lesson. |
Sam Bradford Deserved BetterESPN_RobertFlores | October, 20 2009 03:43:44 | Comments: 2 | Rating: 2Sam Bradford returned to Oklahoma to help the Sooners win a national title. I'm wondering if he got the right kind of help with his decision. After hurting his shoulder against Texas, Bradford won't play this week against Kansas. ESPN draft expert Todd McShay said Saturday on Sportscenter that Bradford may have cost himself millions of dollars. We're talking ten to 20 million. Hindsight is 20/20, and Bradford is an adult, but how is he allowed to make this decision? His family let him down, but so did his coach, Bob Stoops. Stoops is a great recruiter, he should have used those schools to recruit Bradford to the NFL. Who knows maybe he did. Granted, he's in a difficult situation. His job is to win games. But, did he put his player's best interest before his? Would he have done and said the same things if it was his son? Here's more on Bradford from a local perspective. http://www.newsok.com/sam-bradford-faces-nfl-decisions-agains/article/3410435 |
Vin Scully's Greatness and Adam Wainwright Doesn't Like TowelsESPN_RobertFlores | October, 10 2009 00:59:22 | Comments: 2 | Rating: 1I've been in Los Angeles this week anchoring Sportscenter with Stan Verrett. Weather here is gorgeous. Traffic is sooo not gorgeous. Growing up in Houston, I'm used to traffic, but this is ridiculous. The only good thing sitting in the car looking at gum stuck on the road, listening to Vin Scully call the Dodgers-Cardinals game. If you're a certain age, you remember Scully from NBC. But, if you didn't grow up in Southern California maybe you haven't heard him on the radio, where he's even better. Now in his 80's Scully may have lost a little on the fastball but he's still one of the best going. His storytelling is amazing, and he manages to paint a picture with his words. Dodger fans you have plenty to be proud of. Not the least of which is Vin Scully. WAINWRIGHT NOT A TOWEL BOY Adam Wainwright's explanation for Matt Holliday's error was...well.. weak. I appreciate him trying to "pick up" his teammate, but blaming the miscue on the Dodger fans' rally towels??? It just doesn't wash. The Los Angeles Times has an interesting story on this element of Game 2. Check it out below. |
Hit on Tebow Clean? Dirty? Plus, Storming The Field Etiquette, and the Seahawks' UniformsESPN_RobertFlores | September, 27 2009 21:19:01 | Comments: 2 | Rating: 3Back from a few days off, soooo what did I miss? Kentucky's Taylor Wyndham's hit on Florida's Tim Tebow has created quite a bit of news and views on YouTube. One element of the story, the debate on whether or not it was clean or dirty. It definitely was vicious, but it wasn't dirty. By the way, in light of Tebow's "flu-like" symptoms, do you think Gator fans are asking themselves, "We needed a less than healthy Tebow to beat Kentucky?" Also, when you have "flu-like" symptoms..it means you have the flu. CBS Sportsline's Dennis Dodd raises an interesting question on the Wyndham/Tebow collision. http://www.cbssports.com/collegefootball/story/12273664
On Red Alert It's been a lean several years for the University of Houston football program. In 2001, they were winless on the field, and were irrelevent off of it. Current Baylor head coach Art Briles started the turnaround. Current coach Kevin Sumlin is close to completing it and putting the Cougars on the brink of a becoming a "BCS buster". As an alum, I love it. Saturday night's win was easily the biggest win for the program since I was in school there in the early 90's. Now, I'm just "nit-picking" here , but should you really storm the field when your ranked team beats an un-ranked team???? The Cougars were ranked 17th in the country, Texas Tech wasn't in the Top 25. Tech isn't even a rival. Just a thought. But hey, I guess it's hard to blame the students for getting excited. Houston Chronicle columnist Richard Justice explains why the win was so significant for the program. http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/college/houston/6639473.html
Fashion Faux Pas One thing that caught my eye on Sunday, actually blinded my eyes, was the Seahawks uniforms. Their alternate green gear was ridiculous. It looked like the Orlando Thunder had a rummage sale. They weren't the worst jersey's in NFL history, but the worst in XFL history. |
Not A Cowboy Fan, But Love Their Stadium, and I'm The Lions of Madden10ESPN_RobertFlores | September, 21 2009 00:56:53 | Comments: 1 | Rating: 2There's a friendly rivalry that's decades long between Houston and Dallas. So it pains me slightly to see the new Cowboys Stadium outside Arlington. It makes Houston's Reliant Stadium look like a middle school practice field. It's huge, audacious, and expensive. Just the way we Texans like it. You don't have to like the Cowboys to think the players coming to the field through the fans is way cool. I wonder what the next NFL stadium will look like. Jerry Jones has raised the bar. Now, if he would only raise that giant tv. Here's a fans guide to the stadium. http://www.star-telegram.com/stadium/story/1624270.html
I'M A GAMER, BUT MY GAME IS STRUGGLING From the update file: I've exhanged XBOX 360 gamer tags with a few of the viewers recently to play some online action of Madden10. So far, I'm 0-6. Yikes. My third down defense is bad. Houston Texans bad. I can't generate a pass rush, and when I do there are guys running free in the secondary. It's gotten so bad..I'm getting booed at home. By my kids. However, I'm proud that I haven't "pulled the plug" on any of the games. If I'm losing, I'll stick with it to the end. I'm decent like that. Send me your gamer tag...who knows?? You could be my first win. |

"I never came here to kiss Bill Belichick's rings." That's what Rex Ryan said earlier this summer about the Jets/Pats rivalry. This week, Ryan made news with his voice mail to season ticket holders asking for their support for Sunday's game. Is it corny? Yes. Will it make a difference in the game? Absolutely not. Is Ryan entertaining and refreshing? Ummm...Yeah!?!? Ryan's personality is a departure not just from Belichick, but most every coach in the NFL. It's a change that is a welcome change. Have you listened to an Eric Mangini news conference?? Dick Jauron?? Ryan's enthusiasm has spread to at least one player. Check out Kerry Rhodes' comments and Ryan's response to them. What's Eating Gilbert? Washington Wizard Gilbert Arenas has had three surgeries on his knee since the end of the 2007 season. Luckily for him, he has a 100 million dollar contract to fall back on. He says he's finally healthy...and it's the Wizards fault that he's been so delicate. |
Season's Beatings, Brandon Stokely Must Be A Madden Gamer, and JM Marquez Really Wants To WinESPN_RobertFlores | September, 13 2009 22:53:23 | Comments: 1 | Rating: 0The NFL is back, college football is in full swing, and my lip is quivering as I type this. It's been so long. Too long. Should we hug it out? Is there a better time of year? With that said, my season as a fan appears to have ended early with the Texans 24-7 loss to the Jets. At home. Against a rookie head coach. Against a rookie quarterback. John McClain of the Houston Chronicle called the Texans performance their worst. Ever. http://blogs.chron.com/nfl/2009/09/this_stinker_worst_in_texans_h.html
On The Mark On the flip side, Mark Sanchez was great. Our own Trent Dilfer said in many ways Sanchez's debut was better than Matt Ryan's last season. Here's what Bob Glauber of New York Newsday thought.
Child Please Most ridiculous finish of the Week 1 was in the Broncos-Bengals game. When Brandon Stokely was running along the goal line before scoring, was I the only one that thought he stole that move from the Madden video game? That's a classic move I've done and had done to me to waste time off the clock. By the way, rough weekend for most football fans in Ohio huh? Buckeyes, Bengals, Browns yikes.
Stay Thirsty My Friends When Juan Manuel Marquez takes on Floyd Mayweather September 19th, he can take solace in the fact that he's done everything he can to be in the best shape of his life. Including, drinking his own urine. I haven't screamed that loud watching something on tv since I saw The Excorcist for the first time when I was 15 years old. Marquez's unique training diet was shown on HBO's 24/7.

Michael Vick teaches my kids a lesson, Me and The McEnroe Bros, and I Can't Win On MaddenESPN_RobertFlores | August, 31 2009 01:47:35 | Comments: 3 | Rating: 1On Thursday my two sons, ages 14 and 7 wanted to watch one thing on tv, Michael Vick. Neither is an Eagles fan, and they've never mentioned wanting to watch Vick before. My wife asked both of them, "Since when did you guys become fans of Michael Vick. You know what he did right?" "He's a good football player", said my 7 year old. My 14 year old said he was curious to see how he looked after all this time and that, "he's had it rough." It was then I wondered if we, the media, with all our stories and coverage had some how glamorized the superstar turned felon. That certainly wasn't the intetion, not that demonizing was, but glamorizing??? No. The intention of every news outlet is to be accurate and fair. I've told my kids that athletes aren't role models. They should be cheered not emulated. So, I figured this was a good time to remind them of that fact, and to tell my oldest that the reason Vick has "had it rough" recently is because of his own stupidity, and that being stupid can cost you dearly. No matter who you are. That's when my 7 year old said, "Can we have the remote now?" Perfect. Parenting lesson complete. Thanks Michael Vick.
John McEnroe and Patrick McEnroe were in the Sportscenter studios last week in anticipation of this week's US Open. Both will be calling action as part of ESPN's first year of broadcasting the final tennis major of the season. I was struck by how different the two men were, from their dress to their demeanor. John mentioned that he was hungry, I told him our world famous cafeteria. He then asked me if I knew what the specials of the day were. I thought for a moment, and he asked me again. I continued to think, then John shouted, "ANSWER THE QUESTION!!!" No, no, no, that didn't happen. But both were nice to take a pic with me in the studio.
Last week a couple of viewers took me up on my offer to play EA Sports Madden10 against me online. I'm 0-3. All three times I've played as the Houston Texans. My defense is awful. I might have the worst third down defense in the history of football. I need some help. Does anyone have similar problems? If you would like to play, and improve your record, drop me a line with your gamertag. |

Teflon John, Track and Field's Strangest Story, and Madden10 ChallengesESPN_RobertFlores | August, 21 2009 02:29:16 | Comments: 1 | Rating: 0Thursday the NCAA stripped Memphis of 38 wins. By email, fax and news conference. 38 wins gone. A 2008 trip to the Final Four...POOF! Like it never happened. It's the second time the school has had a Final Four appearance vacated because of NCAA violations. The first time was in 1985. It's allso the second time for former Tigers head coach now current Kentucky coach John Calipari. The same thing happened at UMass on his watch. ESPN analyst Doug Gottlieb on Thursday called the Memphis/Calipari pairing a match made in heaven. More like probation hell. But yet Calipari is free of sin, at least in the eyes of the NCAA. How is he able to still coach without punishment? Heck, why not let Kelvin Sampson still coach? Maybe Jerry Tarkanian should start updating that resume. The NCAA calls it's players "student-athletes". Seems the biggest player right now is Calipari. And he just played the NCAA. Again. IAAF Officials Off-Track? The gender questions surrounding South African track star Caster Semenya is the strangest story of 2009. Man? Woman? Complicated tests? Why? Can't they just look and figure it out? It boggles the mind. Here's an interesting story on how this is all playing in her home of South Africa. http://www.thetimes.co.za/News/Article.aspx?id=1052923
It's In The Game I got a few challenges last week to play Madden10 online. Send me your gamertags through this page here on Sportscenter.com or you can follow me on twitter: @roflosc. I've found personally, that XBOX 360 is the best for online play. So sorry PS3 users. Now, before you scream an anti-PS3 bias..I also have a PS3 but don't have great luck playing online. So hit me up..and let's play. |
Brett Favre Secretly Hates Football, Plaxico A Titan??? and My Only Problem with Madden10ESPN_RobertFlores | August, 18 2009 02:29:51 | Comments: 4 | Rating: 2You used to be able to set your watch by it. It was like death and taxes. During a Green Bay Packers game, a member of the broacast team would utter the following phrase, or at least something close to it, "Man I love watching Brett Favre play. He's like a big kid out there. He loves this game. I think he would play it for free if he could." And scene. According to FoxSports.com Favre to the Vikings is still very much in play. If true, it would mark the second straight year he joins a team with training camp under way. No one likes training camp, but most players and coaches will tell you it serves a purpose both individually and collectively. Favre's indecision and late arrivals to camp speak of a player that doesn't love the game as much as we were led to believe. Seasons are in part, determined by the work put in the blistering heat of July and August. Favre doesn't seem willing to make those sacrifices any longer. No one knows better than him the pain and work that goes into a successful season. You have to love it. His actions recently, suggest he doesn't love it enough. At least not anymore.
Plaxico Burress...He's In The Game I picked up Madden10 over the weekend. As expected it's great. I love the improved tackling features especially. I saw something interesting during my season mode. I was playing as the Houston Texans, of course, in the week 2 game against the Tennessee Titans when I noticed a very tall man lined up at receiver for the Titans. One Plaxico Burress. That would be an intriguing signing in real life. Although, the chances of Burress playing for anyone in week 2 is a long shot. My only complaint with the game thus far, and it's a tiny one... when the refs call out a penalty he just says "offense" or "defense" Come on EA Sports! Give me the jersey number please. I would love to hear your thoughts on the game as well. Perhaps we could get some on-line action game action going. What do you think? |
I Just Got Back from Cali'...Cali'...Cali', FernandoMania, and The TV's Funniest SceneESPN_RobertFlores | August, 10 2009 18:08:44 | Comments: 0 | Rating: 2Hi everyone, just back from a mid-week stint on the 10pm Pacific Sportscenter in Los Angeles. Our new west coast studio is basically the same set up to what we have in Bristol, with a few minor differences. The mandatory dress code featuring board shorts and bikinis was odd, but hey when in Rome right??? Here are a couple of pics from my trip. Here's a pic of Dodger Stadium:
This was my first visit and wow does it make an impression. When great parks around the country this one isn't mentioned right away if at all. But look at that view. Also, while not part of the stadium, Vin Scully is still getting it done. He sounds almost as good as he did in his prime. Here's me and Fernando Valenzuela:
I wasn't a Dodger fan growing up, but it was cool meeting Fernando. For those of us outside California I think it's hard to imagine how big a star Valenzuela was when he arrived on the scene in 1981. He's still a huge star in Los Angeles, and does radio for the team's Spanish broadcast. Rescue Me Bringing The Heat Rescue Me on FX is one of the best shows on TV. If you're not on board do yourself a favor and rent the previous season's. Last week's episode featured a scene that may have been the funniest of the year on any show. I can't detail it here, but it does involve the guys helping Garrity diagnose his...um.. problem. Let's Chat I'll be chatting Tuesday at 3:15 eastern on sportscenter.com. Hit me up with some questions, flattery pretty much a guarantee that they will get answered. Later. |
Back From Vacation...Sooooo What Did I Miss???ESPN_RobertFlores | August, 03 2009 03:00:29 | Comments: 5 | Rating: 1A week long vacation is just what the doctor ordered, but it's good to be back. I did a little swimming...with my IPhone, (by the way sticking it in rice is an urban legend it doesn't work), and I've got this rash...but, anywho pretty busy last few days huh? From Michael Vick's reinstatement to Brett Favre's decision to David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez testing for PED's in 2003, the newsmakers weren't on vacation. Being away while those stories happened made me "consume" them a tad bit differently than I normally would. Not as a sportscaster/journalist but as a fan. Nothing more, nothing less. I discovered that for the last week I didn't want to hear about scandals, steroids, or retirement decisions. I just wanted to know the scores. How's my fantasy team doing? Did my team sign their top draft pick? (Texans signed LB Brian Cushing Saturday) This isn't some pie in the sky wish that all news outlets stop going negative, but hopefully we can always remember what's most important isn't what's wrong with sports, but what's right with them.
Assault In The Ring Scores A KO Several weeks back I had a Q/A with filmmaker Eric Drath. His documentary Assault In The Ring deals with the infamous 1983 fight between Billy Collins and Luis Resto. A fight that had lasting effects on both men for decades after. The film, which premiered over the weekend on HBO, is amazing. It's not so much film about boxing, but about redemption. Do yourself a favor and check it out. Here's what the New York Times thought of the film. |
Michael Vick's Reinstatement, The Virginia Perspective, and Beck's HomecomingESPN_RobertFlores | July, 22 2009 10:57:29 | Comments: 6 | Rating: 0If you were NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell what would you do? What would I do? The reinstatement of Michael Vick comes with just two answers. Let him play or let him sit. However, it comes packed with questions. If you're the commissioner, do you want this man to wear your shield and logo again? How can you deny a man the right to make a living? Especially one that has paid his debt to society? Goodell has said he wants to meet with Vick face to face before making a decision on reinstatement. Presumably, to look Vick in the eye and ask him these questions, "Are you sorry? Have you changed?" Vick will say "Yes" to both, but will he say it with the same conviction that he did back in 2007? When he lied to Commissioner Goodell's face about his involvement in this heinous crime in the first place. Michael Vick's reinstatement has just two answers. Yes or No. And I'm still not sure which one is right, or which one I would choose. The Virginia Perspective The Vick story has received plenty of attention everywhere, but no more than in his home state of Virginia. Here's how one columnist in Richmond, Virginia sees things.

David Beckham's first game in Los Angeles since returning from Europe was a success. Of course, only if you consider getting booed non-stop and a near skirmish between Beckham and a fan a success. The Sun newspaper in London had an interesting article written by Rodney Marsh. Marsh is an Englishman who played in the United States in the 1970's. He believes Beckham will have a tough time winning back American fans after his actions.

All Star Intensity, Unis, TMac's New Number and A New Opponent For the Cobra ChaiESPN_RobertFlores | July, 14 2009 02:40:11 | Comments: 1 | Rating: 1Major League Baseball commissioner Bud Selig stopped by the Mike and Mike Show Monday in St Louis. Among the subjects discussed, the ridiculous notion of including homefield advantage for the World Series. Selig's contends that having this at stake brings back the intentsity long missing from the Midsummer Classic. This game doesn't have the intensity or the relevance anymore for a variety of factors. Namely, the players don't care about it as much as they used to. Baseball Tonight's John Kruk, a two time All-Star, said recently that when he played he was one of many that preferred the three days off . Not exactly a promotional slogan, but at least he's honest. The ambivalance of this game by the players who play it won't be solved by some gimmick. All-Star Uni Watch When I was younger the best thing about the Major League Baseball All Star Game was seeing all the different uniforms on the field at the same time. I always wondered why certain guys would wear white shoes during the All Star Game instead of their usual "gamers". There's a great blog called uniwatch.com...here's the link www.uniwatch.com, that explores topics like that and more. Check it out if you're interested in the nuances of uniforms from decades back to present day. T-Mac's New Number Tracy McGrady has been source of frustration for most Rocket fans for the last several seasons. However, his latest venture is something fans of all teams can get behind. Viewer Mail Take 2ESPN_RobertFlores | July, 07 2009 02:37:26 | Comments: 0 | Rating: 0
In last week's entry I posted a little feedback from an irate viewer. It got a pretty good response from you, so this week we're dipping into the 'ol mailbag again. This time the emails are from people that don't hate me. At least not yet. Here we go: "Mr Flores. I was just wondering why sportscenter or the network doesn't cover more NHL highlights and news. I think that if you were to cover more NHL news, that it could thrive into one of the top sports along with baseball, football and basketball. I hope you don't take this as I'm blaming you. I'm just trying to get more coverage for a sport thats on the uprising." Profile name: JBB4412507 ME: Thanks for the email. This is a tough one because hockey fans are among the most passionate around. However, tv ratings suggest there isn't enough of them to warrant the kind of extensive coverage you're speaking about. But, those same ratings indicate that things are improving. I will submit to you that the NHL still has some key hurdles to climb before it can assume a spot along side other sports. I believe coming back to ESPN would be a good move. Of course, I'm biased. "Why aren't we talking about one of the greatest finishes to a fantastic race on the fourth of july? The race a Daytona was a great race and i haven't heard anything about it." Profile name: Fucarr ME: It was a great finish wasn't it? I'm not a Tony Stewart, but I'm kind of pulling for him this year. I know that the hi-lite to that race ran extensively on Sportscenter and ESPNEWS that night and following day. Included in that coverage was post-race sound from key drivers. If you're looking for extensive NASCAR coverage check out NASCAR Now daily on ESPN2. "Since a cavalier is a knight I suggest Shaq's new name be: Sirquille O'Neal" Profile name: SMB02892 ME: Well played, well played. I like it. It's just difficult enough for me to butcher on live television.
"You are so terrible. You're like this #### lil child sittin up there that got handed way too many lolipops as a child. Your jokes are pathetic. You make every moment weird and you sound like a complete incompetent imbecile. Get a grip, give up your seat and save us all the trouble of watching some little fool who thinks hes cute with the fellow female casters. You are a joke. BTW, try sittin there with a little posture too, its like where is your kneck located. Have some pride and dont hunch you sad excuse." Profile name: Darkine Slappy
ME: Wow, how did this one slip in? Well, Mr/Ms Slappy I'm sorry you feel that way. I will certainly work on my posture so everyone can see my "kneck" and maybe my "kneckties". I guess you gave spell check the night off huh? Eh, it happens. But, how did you spell "imbecile" correctly? Thanks for the note and keep watching!
As the great Maury Povich says, "till next time America."

A Viewer Sends Me An Email and Fight Night Round 4 Packs A PunchESPN_RobertFlores | June, 29 2009 04:04:31 | Comments: 2 | Rating: 0On the heels of last week's NBA draft, Friday's edition of Sportscenter featured a bit called Sportscenter's Hi-lite draft. During which I gave a "little tip to the cap" to a sketch on "The Chappelle Show" At least one viewer didn't find the effort worthwhile. Below is a message sent to my profile page on his site. After reading it, I can't even get mad. It's a well thought out note, grammatically it's solid and I think all of the words are spelled correctly. Thankfully, the language isn't offensive. The writer must be a lawyer, "Robert, I have watched sportscenter nearly every single day, numberous times a day with many different anchors for about the past decade. I will not even begin to talk about how terrible the live edition of sportscenter has been in the mornings with you as co host, but on today's edition where you tap the microphone while mocking the NBA draft and say "We take the izza, the shizza, the Wu Tang Clang" and try to mock the Chappelle Show to be humerous. I can now say I have lost the little respect for you that I had (while as an anchor) I hate everything about you and what you bring to sportscenter. Dice K Is Master Of The ObviousESPN_RobertFlores | June, 22 2009 04:02:19 | Comments: 2 | Rating: 0Red Sox pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka is going on the disabled list. He thinks pitching in the World Baseball Classic may have had something to do with his ailing shoulder. Really? You don't say? Thanks for that Dice-K. Matsuzaka led Japan to a second straight title in the WBC and was named most valuable player in the process. But he's been terrible ever since. I like the idea of a World Cup style event in baseball. But it's just not practical, save it for the video games. Especially when you have at least a 162 game schedule looming soon afterwards. How does Major League Baseball allow this to continue? Why can't the Red Sox prevent their high priced talent from having what is basically a second job? Shouldn't teams with players that participated be allowed an extra roster spot
Red Sox Hate To Tell Dice K, "I Told You So" but... Apparently, the Red Sox and Matszuka have butted heads on a few things in the past. Like say everything. Check out this interesting read from the Boston Herald

US Soccer Is Doughy Soft And TV Shows You Should Have WatchedESPN_RobertFlores | June, 19 2009 02:43:07 | Comments: 1 | Rating: 2I'm hooked. It took me a while, but I'm officially on board with soccer. Confederations Cup, Gold Cup, World Cup, Dixie Cup all of it. If it's on the pitch, (sorry Chris McKendry) then I'm all about it. All right, so here's my first question, "How come the United States isn't better?" I know this isn't our national pastime, and we're well behind most of the world in this department, kind of like our math scores...but shouldn't our men's national team start winning something? Soon? After watching Brazil blank the Americans Thursday in Confederations Cup play, I posed that question to our soccer analyst Alexi Lalas. He told me that he wasn't disappointed in Thursday's result, but rather how the United States play. "We were soft", said Lalas. "The U.S. is missing personality, character and heart." Since I was a kid, I was told that we would eventually been a soccer power. When I asked Lalas why our men's program hasn't progressed like the women's, he said our biggest problem is us. "We are a victim of our organization." And that while we have alot of kids playing soccer, we don't have enough kids playing pick up soccer. "In many ways that's where you learn to play the game, where the creativity is born." American goaltender Tim Howard echoed those thoughts to ESPN The Magazine when he said, "In America, there are travel teams and team mothers and tournaments. It's an organization, and until we see it as a street game, we're never going to get where we need to be."
TV Shows You Should Have Watched Entertainment Weekly posted a list of 17 shows that you should rediscover. Pretty good list. Check It Out. I still can't believe I've never seen an episode of The Wire. How does that happen? http://www.ew.com/ew/gallery/0,,20284709,00.html

Not A SurpriseESPN_RobertFlores | June, 17 2009 16:16:15 | Comments: 0 | Rating: 1The news of Sammy Sosa's name linked to a positive drug test isn't a surprise. His story and others like it have become like a movie where you can predict the ending. Guy's name first surfaces, guy denies wrongdoing, guy then reportedly tests positive for performance enhancing drugs. Not only have fans become cynical, so too have players and former players. Check out this story from the Chicago Tribune, particularly the comments from former Sosa teammate Frank Thomas.

Power Rangers vs The Dis-Astros For years the Astros have been a much better team and organization than the Rangers. But not anymore. It's amazing what you can do when you sign your draft picks right. That's right I'm looking in your direction Drayton McLane. Houston Chronicle columnist Richard Justice details and gives hope to other fans of struggling franchises across the league.

Not So Great Scott It wasn't too long ago that Adam Scott was considered a viable, consistent challenger to Tiger Woods But it probably won't happen this year. Too bad, considering so many were expecting a big season...namely himself.
