A Viewer Sends Me An Email and Fight Night Round 4 Packs A PunchESPN_RobertFlores | June, 29 2009 04:04:31 | Comments: 2 | Rating: 0On the heels of last week's NBA draft, Friday's edition of Sportscenter featured a bit called Sportscenter's Hi-lite draft. During which I gave a "little tip to the cap" to a sketch on "The Chappelle Show" At least one viewer didn't find the effort worthwhile. Below is a message sent to my profile page on his site. After reading it, I can't even get mad. It's a well thought out note, grammatically it's solid and I think all of the words are spelled correctly. Thankfully, the language isn't offensive. The writer must be a lawyer, "Robert, I have watched sportscenter nearly every single day, numberous times a day with many different anchors for about the past decade. I will not even begin to talk about how terrible the live edition of sportscenter has been in the mornings with you as co host, but on today's edition where you tap the microphone while mocking the NBA draft and say "We take the izza, the shizza, the Wu Tang Clang" and try to mock the Chappelle Show to be humerous. I can now say I have lost the little respect for you that I had (while as an anchor) I hate everything about you and what you bring to sportscenter. I try to say this as constructive criticisim but I must say, you are awful and today was an embarressment" EA Sports Scores KO w/Fight Night Round 4 I spent most of this past weekend playing EA Sports Fight Night Round 4. If you have a passing interest in video games do yourself a favor get it. Graphics are incredible. gameplay is amazing. ESPN's Joe Tessitore and Teddy Atlas provide an excellent blow-by-blow commentary as well. Gamers will enjoy it, boxing fans who are gamers will love it. Dice K Is Master Of The ObviousESPN_RobertFlores | June, 22 2009 04:02:19 | Comments: 2 | Rating: 0Red Sox pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka is going on the disabled list. He thinks pitching in the World Baseball Classic may have had something to do with his ailing shoulder. Really? You don't say? Thanks for that Dice-K. Matsuzaka led Japan to a second straight title in the WBC and was named most valuable player in the process. But he's been terrible ever since. I like the idea of a World Cup style event in baseball. But it's just not practical, save it for the video games. Especially when you have at least a 162 game schedule looming soon afterwards. How does Major League Baseball allow this to continue? Why can't the Red Sox prevent their high priced talent from having what is basically a second job? Shouldn't teams with players that participated be allowed an extra roster spot
Red Sox Hate To Tell Dice K, "I Told You So" but... Apparently, the Red Sox and Matszuka have butted heads on a few things in the past. Like say everything. Check out this interesting read from the Boston Herald

US Soccer Is Doughy Soft And TV Shows You Should Have WatchedESPN_RobertFlores | June, 19 2009 02:43:07 | Comments: 1 | Rating: 2I'm hooked. It took me a while, but I'm officially on board with soccer. Confederations Cup, Gold Cup, World Cup, Dixie Cup all of it. If it's on the pitch, (sorry Chris McKendry) then I'm all about it. All right, so here's my first question, "How come the United States isn't better?" I know this isn't our national pastime, and we're well behind most of the world in this department, kind of like our math scores...but shouldn't our men's national team start winning something? Soon? After watching Brazil blank the Americans Thursday in Confederations Cup play, I posed that question to our soccer analyst Alexi Lalas. He told me that he wasn't disappointed in Thursday's result, but rather how the United States play. "We were soft", said Lalas. "The U.S. is missing personality, character and heart." Since I was a kid, I was told that we would eventually been a soccer power. When I asked Lalas why our men's program hasn't progressed like the women's, he said our biggest problem is us. "We are a victim of our organization." And that while we have alot of kids playing soccer, we don't have enough kids playing pick up soccer. "In many ways that's where you learn to play the game, where the creativity is born." American goaltender Tim Howard echoed those thoughts to ESPN The Magazine when he said, "In America, there are travel teams and team mothers and tournaments. It's an organization, and until we see it as a street game, we're never going to get where we need to be."
TV Shows You Should Have Watched Entertainment Weekly posted a list of 17 shows that you should rediscover. Pretty good list. Check It Out. I still can't believe I've never seen an episode of The Wire. How does that happen? http://www.ew.com/ew/gallery/0,,20284709,00.html

Not A SurpriseESPN_RobertFlores | June, 17 2009 16:16:15 | Comments: 0 | Rating: 1The news of Sammy Sosa's name linked to a positive drug test isn't a surprise. His story and others like it have become like a movie where you can predict the ending. Guy's name first surfaces, guy denies wrongdoing, guy then reportedly tests positive for performance enhancing drugs. Not only have fans become cynical, so too have players and former players. Check out this story from the Chicago Tribune, particularly the comments from former Sosa teammate Frank Thomas.

Power Rangers vs The Dis-Astros For years the Astros have been a much better team and organization than the Rangers. But not anymore. It's amazing what you can do when you sign your draft picks right. That's right I'm looking in your direction Drayton McLane. Double Secret Probation Sir?? And Rex, (hopefully the good one) Is Headed To HoustonESPN_RobertFlores | June, 12 2009 03:23:44 | Comments: 1 | Rating: 3One of the bloggers out there on the "internets" compared Alabama's latest scrape with the NCAA to Delta House being put on "Double Secret Probation" a la Animal House. The Tide are repeat offenders and this latest infraction involving textbooks and student athletes will cost them wins in the record books but not scholarships for the team's involved, most importantly the football team. But maybe this is an instance where the NCAA got it right. The punishment does fit the crime. Check out Ivan Maisel's take on it. http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/columns/story?columnist=maisel_ivan&id=4252254
Which Rex Will The Texans Get? Houston Chronicle reported that Rex Grossman was signing a one year deal with the Texans pending a physical. Listen, I know Bear fans can fill my inbox with tales of "The Good Rex" and "The Bad Rex". As a Texans fan, I'm just glad that Houston has a back up with Grossman's pedigree. Remember, he played in a Super Bowl. Boy, that just doesn't sound right does it?? Nick Anderson, Knicks Want Magic Center...Not That One And Our Viewers Are SmartESPN_RobertFlores | June, 10 2009 00:57:07 | Comments: 0 | Rating: 1As I watch the Magic take on the Lakers, I can't help but think about the 1995 NBA Finals. Orlando was swept by Houston, but the first game decided the series. Magic forward Nick Anderson's missed four straight throws at the end of regulation. This is a great article done by the Orlando Sentinel and the toll those misses took on Anderson.
Polish Power New York Post reporting that the Knicks have their eye on Orlando back up center Marcin Gortat. I would love for the Rockets to sign the soon-to-be unrestricted free agent. He's a good defender and isn't a stiff offensively. Besides, the Knicks have had worse players playing center recently. I'm looking at you Jerome James and Eddy Curry. The Polish born 7 footer seems like he's interested. Read below
I Stand Corrected Tuesday, I mentioned on the air that we were having a debate about Chipper Jones' Hall of Fame candidacy. I got this email from a viewer. He or she didn't leave their name but I have to admit, this person makes a compelling argument. Job well done, sir or madam. "How can you ask if Chipper Jones is a Hall-of-Famer? I'm sure there's room for debate, but for me, there's no real question. He was the Rookie of the Year. He was an MVP. He is a 6-time All-Star (who should probably have more appearances). He has always been a great defensive player. He has a career OBP of well over .400. He has a career OPS of over .950. He has over 400 home runs, and he is still one of the toughest outs in the baseball. Finally, only Frankie Frisch (a HOF-er born in 1898) has a better career average as a switch-hitter. This all goes without saying that his team won the division the first 12 years he was on the team... and he was in the heart of that lineup for most all of that strech. Just thought I'd throw in my opinion... but I love you guys. Keep up the good work" Good stuff right? I've alway said we have the smartest viewers in the world. Okay, maybe not all of you...but you get the point.

Royal Pain For The King, Pitchin' Ain't Easy, and Horns Up In BristolESPN_RobertFlores | June, 01 2009 22:54:09 | Comments: 1 | Rating: 2I can't imagine what it's like being the best player on the floor night in and night out. I can't imagine what it's like being the best player on the floor and not on the best team year in and year out. I know Lebron James hates to lose, that's what makes him great. But, there's something that rubs me the wrong way about his actions after Saturday's loss to the Magic. No handshake, no explanation, no class. Which made it even more surprising was that it came from Lebron. An athlete who has shown nothing but class in his short time in the league. His Sunday explanation of, "You don't congratulate someone who has been beating you up", is even more frustrating. But Alan Hahn of New York Newsday says cut Lebron some slack. http://www.newsday.com/sports/basketball/ny-sphahn0212828927jun01,0,6167375.column Pitchin' Ain't Easy Monday on Sportscenter we featured an Astros/Pirate hi-lite that included Charlie Brown's first pitch. To that end, we compiled a list of some other first pitches that didn't go well. Including, Howard Stern producer Gary Dell'abate's aka Baba Booey's effort May 9th. I give Gary credit, he deliberately flubbed that pitch so badly just so Howard and company and all of Stern nation would have years and years of material. Oh wait, that wasn't made up? He really throws like that? Yikes. Hang in there Gary. Anywho, here's the clip. Colt at the Worldwide Leader I ran into Texas quarterback Colt McCoy Monday at the ESPN Campus in Bristol, CT. He was doing interviews for the various shows, websites etc. I was struck by how big he was. He's definitely not the skinny kid that arrived in Austin four years ago. Colt said he loved the weather in the northeast, especially since they were already hitting triple digits in Central Texas. He also mentioned that he was craving some Tex-Mex. I told him, "Colt you're a long way from home."

School officials blamed the violation on a personal assistant who didn't know any better. But Kiffin should have. He has been a lightning rod for controversy since his arrival. Battier vs Kobe, This Year's Rays and James Harrison Is HilariousESPN_RobertFlores | May, 17 2009 18:32:55 | Comments: 0 | Rating: 1My co anchor *Chris McKendry* started an interesting topic during Friday's on air, [-groundbreaking-] chat on *Sportscenter.com*. Is *Shane Battier* a better leader than *Kobe Bryant*? Head-to-Head there's no comparison between their basketball skills, but titles aren't decided in one-on-one contests. Does your team's best player have to be your leader as well? Can a player lead those more talented than he is? Are some players just natural born leaders, while others are not? The answer to all three: yes As far as the *Battier/Kobe* debate it's impossible for outsiders to know who is better at leading their respective teams. I talked with my brother and sister-in-law, both are high school basketball coaches in the Houston area. My sister-in-law played college ball at the University of Texas. Both did say the same thing about leadership in the team setting: Some guys have it, others don't. You can't teach it. They also offered the notion that a player's ability to come through in the clutch is a big part of their ability to lead, (that's a _huge_ point in Kobe's favor) and a player's leadership skills are put on display before the game not during. As a Rocket fan, I've grown to love Battier's professionalism and passion. However, drawing charges, and pre-game speeches doesn't mean he's a better leader than Kobe. Just different. *Rangers: This Year's Rays?* The Rangers are in first place. That just sounds weird right? Give skipper *Ron Washington* credit. http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/spt/stories/051709dnspotaylorcol.3364f6e.html *Do It For Johnny* I've heard that new Yankee stadium has the same dimensions as the previous one. But, I just saw the hi-lites of Johnny Damon's walk off homer against the Twins. Was that a check swing homer??? *Mr Harrison Isn't Going To Washington* Uhhhh, seriously? Scott Walker: Breakin' Faces and Hearts In BostonESPN_RobertFlores | May, 15 2009 10:37:58 | Comments: 0 | Rating: 1Let me preface this by saying I'm not a fan of either the Hurricanes or the Bruins. With that said, am I the only one that found the post game comments by Carolina coach *Paul Maurice* and *Scott Walker* a little bit odd? Both talked about how this had been a trying week for Walker, referring to the fallout after his knockout punch of the Bruins *Aaron Ward in game five. My first thought was, "I thought Ward is the one with the broken face not this guy." Look, give Walker credit for coming up big with the game on line last night, but for him and his coach to equate his "pain and suffering" with that of Ward is laughable. Our NBA analyst *Jalen Rose* has a good point: *Stan Van Gundy* deserves a share of the blame, but so too does Howard. As Jalen put it, Howard has to hold himself and his teammates accountable. He has to be more agressive down on the blocks. Think about it, can you imagine *Hakeem Olajuwon* or *Shaquille O'Neal* settling for not getting any touches down the stretch? Look, I get that the NFL wants to be global and they want to expand the game. But this is about money first and foremost. I don't fault the NFL for making money, especially in these times. At the risk of sounding jingoistic, wouldn't it best to make that money in _this_ country? Another factor to consider the quality of play. The two games played in London in the last two regular seasons have been marred by rain and poor turf. I don't think the weather will be much better in February.
