Keep Thinking of Ryan Davidson

ESPN_NeilEverett | January, 12 2009 16:42:33 | Comments: 0 | Rating: 1

My mom was 45 when the brain cancer got her, my step mom is close to 70, it recently found her...when you're a 20-year-old kid like i was during my mom's illness, you think 45 is old...then you get to be that age, like i have, and you realize 45 isn't old...neither is 70...neither is 15...which is how old my friend Ryan is...he too has brain cancer...he's been fighting it darn near his whole life...Over the past 9 1/2 years, Ryan has endured 4 brain surgeries, 60 rounds of radiation treatment, and 25 months of chemotherapy...those are staggering numbers...so is this...22,000-plus...that's the amount of money pledged on Ryan's behalf for the American Cancer Society Relay For Life...Ryan's goal was 15-thousand...Ryan's motivation, he told his family he doesn't want any other kid to go thru what he has gone thru... You know i've written about ryan four or five times now because his strength continues to amaze me...continue to think of him, please... You can see a picture of Ryan and keep up to date on his fight if you so desire at http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/ryandavidson

New Year, New Game Plan

ESPN_NeilEverett | January, 02 2009 09:17:37 | Comments: 0 | Rating: 1

where to start on the finish of 2008 or the beginning of 2009... last year was better than the year before but i'm hoping this year is better than last year...it'll be my last month here at espn in connecticut...the worldwide leader opening a home office in los angeles...we're going to do sc in so cal...the west coast is home so i signed up to head out...my head hurts, not from any bubbly new year's eve night, but from the anguish of saying so-long to so many people i've met here over the last 7-plus years... i came here from hawaii, and i heard about east coast folks and how unfriendly they were...listen, hawaii is the land of aloha but you can run into bad apples there as well...never had a problem here which is why i'm having more of a problem than i ever thought i would when it comes to leaving here... So with everyone telling me congrats, I want to tell everyone, thanks...enjoy whatever journey you're on…happy new year

This Year - It's More Than Bragging Rights.

The best story in college football over Thanksgiving weekend is not in Oklahoma, Alabama or Florida. The Ducks and Beavers play for 'the right to live in the state of Oregon.' ....That's how one former coach described this weekend's civil war... For Oregon State, a win and it's the Rose Bowl...that's like Ugly Betty winning a beauty contest...i saw Ugly Betty play at Penn State…ugly...then I saw her beat USC…gorgeous...beat Oregon and Oregon State gets Penn State in the granddaddy of 'em Been 44-years since Oregon State went to the Rose Bowl...it's been 25 years since I went to the civil war, which by the way is the longest football rivalry on the West Coast in terms of number of games played ...that 1983 game I attended as an Oregon grad...0-0...affectionately referred to as the Toilet Bowl, i read that game was the last scoreless tie in Division I football... 25-years later i'm finding it hard not to root for the team I used to love to hate...I'm getting soft, like rose pedals...

Now That's a Triple Play...

ESPN_NeilEverett | October, 16 2008 09:27:00 | Comments: 0 | Rating: 1

There have been 14 unassisted triple plays in major league history... The triple play turned last week in New York a collaborative effort...The Lyons family welcoming IDENTICAL triplets into the world...three boys...not named Tinker or Evers or Chance...although the chance of delivering triplets is about one in 6,400...identical triplets, one in a million according to the director of the medical center where Kevin, Declan, and Cormac were born... For those of you who wonder if there should be an asterisk next to the birth, there were no fertility drugs involved...and the three sons are as healthy as Ernie, Chip, and Robbie... According to the New York Post, mom and dad will buy 850-plus gallons of milk in the boys first four years...and change 18-thousand diapers until they find the men's room on their own... And when the men are ready to go to college...three to a private university, about the same price as three season tickets behind the dugout at the new Yankee Stadium...

The Wright Stuff

ESPN_NeilEverett | September, 12 2008 07:27:01 | Comments: 0 | Rating: 1

I'm writing this one day after the 7th anniversary of the 9-11 attacks...I want to write about what happened one day before September 11th of THIS year... David Wright...the new york met...for the third consecutive year...visited Engine 10, Ladder 10 in New York City...the firehouse right across the street from Ground Zero...the one that lost six men seven years ago...the one you may have peeked inside if you've ever visited that area... From what I read, Wright smiled for every picture, and signed every item handed him...the smile he put on the face of one ten year old boy made his mother cry ...the boy's daddy worked and died in the world trade center... Another couple brought their 7-year old grandson...his mom was killed on the job that day...she was a big Met's fan, and the son she hardly knew was wearing a Mets jersey... There are times in our lives we will never forget...9-11 surely qualifies regardless of your loss that day...there are also people in the lives of others who do unforgettable things...David Wright was one such person this week...

Keeping Pace with Jimmie Johnson

ESPN_NeilEverett | September, 03 2008 08:44:59 | Comments: 0 | Rating: 1

I got to interview Jimmie Johnson this past Sunday, the race car Jimmie not the "how 'bout them Cowboys' Jimmy. The talkback was live which is quite a rush...not the rush Johnson gets driving fast cars but an adrenaline thing for me. A two-time Cup champion, Johnson's a big deal. I'd met him before, not that he'd remember...Johnson once visited ESPN ....nice enuff fella, pretty reserved...did do a funny sc commercial...the one where he's chippin away at the speed bump.... Jimmie is also chippin away at anyone who thinks he and his fellow drivers are just fellas who drive fast, pitch products, and gush on sponsors... Aside from blowing away the field at Fontana this past weekend, Johnson hosted a golf tournament that raised half a million bucks for the Jimmie Johnson foundation...second time he's held the tournament...what he does with the money is have a house or homes built and then gives the keys to a family in need...Habitat for Humanity riding shotgun with Johnson on this one...the homes are on a soon-to-be-named street just miles from where Johnson grew up in El Cajon, California. That's more impressive to me than anything he does behind the wheel.

Passion for Music, Passion for Baseball

Derek Trucks is a guitar player…some say he's the best slide player alive. Guitar God, if you like...mesmerizing. Derek has his own band, and he also plays for the Allman Brothers Band. Derek rarely says a word on-stage but I recently caught up with him backstage, and he shared with me the story of meeting his great uncle, Virgil Trucks, a former major leaguer. You can google Virgil and see that he was a heckuva player. Derek used to keep a baseball card of Virgil in his touring bus, not sure if he does anymore. Derek said he and his dad took a trip to Alabama last month and found the 92-year old Virgil. It was the first time both men had met him. Derek said they sat their for two-plus hours listening to baseball stories…said his great uncle had some unreal stories about Satchel Paige. Derek's eyes lit up as he talked about his road trip…much the way mine had lit up watching him work the guitar earlier that night. Then there's the fact that I went to the Ratdog/Allman Brothers concert that Derek performed at with Bill Walton…no, I'm not kidding!

Meet Ryan Davidson

ESPN_NeilEverett | August, 13 2008 10:31:03 | Comments: 0 | Rating: 1

First, for those of you who read last week's blog where I debated the merits of going to either the Neil Diamond concert or Barry Melrose's going-away party...I hit 'em both! Left the concert in Hartford prior to the encore so i missed just three songs...took me three hours to drive the 90-miles to Boston because of traffic, weather, and ineptitude...hung with Barry until morning. One of my strongest plays in recent memory. This week, a serious note: I want to introduce you to Ryan Davidson, a teen just trying to be a kid in Wisconsin...cancer keeps trying to make him old before his time...this 15-year old continues to face it and fight it with courage that I don't believe I have... This past week, Ryan had one of his routine follow-ups, if going to the doctor for treatment of brain cancer can be called routine...for the fourth time since Ryan was diagnosed 9-years ago, he was told he has cancer... You can see a picture of Ryan and keep up to date on his fight if you so desire at "http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/ryandavidson":http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/ryandavidson CaringBridge is a nonprofit organization that helps friends and families stay connected. I'm all about good karma and positive energy. If you have some to share with Ryan and his family, they'd be much obliged. First time I read about Ryan, three year ago...12-years old in the middle of chemo treatments but determined to road trip to Southern Cal to watch his beloved Trojans play...there he bonded with Matt Leinart...they keep in touch on a fairly regular basis. Ryan just wrote me and said he's predicting 16-0 and a Super Bowl for the Cardinals... Then he added, feel free to tell everyone at ESPN that you heard it here first...what I'm telling everyone who can read this blog...keep the boy I've never even met in your thoughts and prayers...

A Diamond or a (Mel)rose?

ESPN_NeilEverett | August, 08 2008 21:39:53 | Comments: 0 | Rating: 1

Tough decision of the week: What to do on Thursday night - go to Neil Diamond or go to Barry Melrose's going-away party in Boston? If the two were touring together, Neil would open for Barry...Melrose is that much of a dude. And if you think Neil Diamond is a putz, then you need to brush up on cool cuz Neil Diamond is cool...just not as cool as Barry Melrose. Melrose party is in Boston, Diamond plays down the block here...that would seem to be advantage Neil...but the party in Boston is at Steve Levy's bar, "The Greatest Bar"...advantage Barry. One night in Boston...another night in the greater Hartford area...big advantage Barry. My tickets for Neil Diamond are on the floor but near the back of the arena...with Barry, I'm standing right next to him sharing a beverage...advantage Barry. Am going to Melrose party alone...have a hot date for Diamond show...big advantage Neil. Have to buy a hotel room if Levy won't let me sleep in his bar...or can sleep in my own bed if I see the concert...advantage Neil. By the time you read this, I will have made my bed...
