The Detroit Lions have A TON of work to do before the start of the 2009-2010 season. Here are some things that could be done to help get above 500 quicker
First, draft a lineman with the first pick---There are 3 good options in Monroe, J. Smith, and A. Smith. Whichever one they choose, it will strengthen their O-Line, and help Kevin Smith reach huis full potential. It will also help protect the QB, whoever that may be.
Second, with their second pick, this may sound like a bit of a stretch, but take Josh Freeman, the QB from KSU. He is fast, athletic, and has a cannon. Mechanics can be changed and taught, but you can't give someone potential and ability, which he has. It will also add another dimension to the Lion's offense, because, now that they have a stronger line (due to their first pick) Kevin Smith and Calvin Johnson will have a little easier time gaining yards, b/c teams aren't gonna be able to send an all-out blitz or send 8 guys deep in coverage, without fearing getting burned
Third, get a good defensive FA. Maybe make a run at Jonathon Vilma, and strengthen up our LB corps. Maybe go after a lineman, such as Bertrand Berry. Peppers and Haynesworth are unlikely to sign, but Berry seems like a logical move. Or you can go secondary too, and maybe get Kelvin Hayden or Rodney Harrison. Do anything, but bring in a guy on Defense who the fansknow and will like.
Finally, regain your fanbase. The Lions have had very loyal fans for their entire existence, but this year was different. Games weren't selling out, which means they weren't bein televised. They did not win a game last year, and were frequently embarassed on their home turf. As loyal as the fans have been these many years, they deserve to see a competitive team on the field.
This may not solve all of the problems, but it's a step in the right direction.
