1955: Brooklyn Dodgers beat the New York Yankees...for their first World Series title. I heard it happen over the intercom at Whitesville school in West Virginia.
I was a Brooklyn Dodgers fan while my best friend was a Yankees fan from 1950 forward. Yeah, that makes me a longtime Dodgers fan and very, very OLD!

also, in the 50s, a kid from Cabin Creek played against my older sister's high school team (Sherman High) in Seth, WV. Sis knew our "tall" center and talked to him after Jerry West singlehandedly stomped 'em. "We were never in the game," Sadler said. "Jerry West is unbelievable!" I listened, on the radio, all the way through West's career at WVU and then followed him when he joined the Minneapolis Lakers (yes, kids, that's where the name comes from) where former WVU star, Hot Rod Hundley had gone, and where the great Elgin Baylor played. Jerry didn't adapt as quickly to the NBA as did his college rival, the Big O, Oscar Robertson, but went on to become one of the greatest to play in the pros and the symbol of the NBA. The Big O, of course, once averaged a triple-double for an entire season! It was hard not to follow Oscar while following Jerry West, because he was just head and shoulders above every other basketball player in the world except Jerry, who came close enough to be the number two best player of that college era. In West Virginia, of course, we didn't see it that way, but it was true. Oscar, of course, had to fight the problems of racism that plagued the "idyllic" (for white folks) '50s. Whenever I see racism still showing up in today's events, it makes me sad. We thought we got better on that one over the years. Here's hopin'!

In that vein, people try to "politicize" me,just like they do you. Don't fall to peer pressure from any side, is what I believe. Live, or die, by your inner convictions. That's what I try to do. But, just so you won't wonder, I believe that our forebears wrongly invaded this Turtle Island and committed genocide on the original inhabitants. I believe that the only good thing we did after that is called the Constitution. The Constitution framed the possibility for us to be a free Democratic Republic, an idea whose time has obviously not yet come. The Constitution entitles every citizen to ownership of this government, but we have
abdicated our power progressively over the centuries to criminals who have returned us to practical socialist monarchy. In other words the servants have taken over the manor. We need to fire them, get down and be family, and try to honor our ancestors' best thoughts, intentions and legacy. We need to take our country back, peacefully, from the criminals who run it.

How does this apply to the sports arena? Again, criminals have taken over from the fans. Power to the People! That is my politics and has been for many years and it has cost me a great deal, but I'm at peace with myself and simply live to give and put out the LOVE that, knock on wood, has saved me so far from total self-destruction. So,just accept that that's how I see things and I'll respect your input. Only LOVE matters.
