The Never Say Die Kid

Note from Kevin Carroll

I had been in many elementary schools, middle school and high schools prior to my visit to Errol Hassel Elementary School in Aloha, Oregon, but I had no idea that an unassuming little girl was about to set in motion a series of events, meetings and an eight year (and counting) friendship.

In Mrs. Hess’ fourth grade classroom, students were already assembled: some in desks,... Full Post

Been a pleasure to see your writing more in The Mag and online. Also i saw you were associated with Sport for a Better World... could you talk to me a little about that! I sent you a message more in depth. Appreciate it.

hey Katalyst4Sport fellow Big 5er. I go to La Salle University now. I'm a 3rd year sophomore because I transfered in from a two-year school, Manor College in local Jenkintown. There I played basketball for two years against the surrounding community colleges. I got so much out of playing basketball for Manor it helped me change for the better. I made life-long friends and finally became my own person. Though we came up short both years I wouldn't trade that experience for anything. Great topic!

I remember growing up as a kid in the late 60's and early 70's in Freeport, NY in a racially divided town and how we used to get together and play ball with each other in little league. We didn't care if our tammate was black or hispanic, Jewish or Catholic, rich or poor. It didn't matter. All we knew was to play ball and have fun. The world could have gone to hell at that point. As long as we were playing ball, that was all that mattered to us.

Good luck on your new position with ESPN!

I'm from Greenville, NC, home of the East Carolina University Pirates. In 1999, hurricane Floyd produced what was called the flood of the century. The football team was on the road at the time, and couldn't return home for a game with Miami(FL) because of the water. NC State was kind enough to let us use their stadium, and it was very moving to see the whole town cheer when the team came on the field to warm up. Even better, we beat the Hurricanes that night, literally and figuratively.

I love that ESPN is allowing you and giving you time and space to write about the postive aspects of sports. I am in an advanced media writing class right now and I am working on a sports story of 7000 words on the positive nature of sports specifically of soccer, which is my love. I appreciate your article on the Homeless world cup!! i look forward to your future articles

Be sure to Read today's New York Times Sunday Magazine. The cover story (Why Do We Play?) is about all about PLAY & the role it has in our developmental years. Personally, I think adults need it just as much as children - maybe more so. Enjoy the read!
